Google Pixel 4a vs. Pixel 4a 5G

Google released two mid-range Pixels in late 2020: the Pixel 4a at $349 and the Pixel 4a 5G at $499. The naming is misleading. The 5G in "Pixel 4a 5G" suggests that 5G connectivity is the only difference, but the 5G version is meaningfully larger, has a better chip, and adds a second rear camera lens. It's closer to a Pixel 5 Lite than to a 5G-enabled 4a. Worth understanding the actual differences before paying the $150 premium.

The Hardware Differences

Screen. The 4a has a 5.81-inch OLED display. The 4a 5G has a 6.2-inch OLED. Both are 60Hz panels with a punch-hole front camera, both run at 1080p, and both have the same software-driven Always-on Display. The size difference is meaningful in the hand: the 4a fits comfortably one-handed, the 4a 5G needs two for most actions.

Chip. The 4a uses a Snapdragon 730G. The 4a 5G uses a Snapdragon 765G. The 765G is roughly 15% to 20% faster on CPU, has a meaningfully better GPU for gaming, and integrates the 5G modem. In daily use, both phones feel responsive; gamers and people who keep many apps open will feel the difference, casual users won't.

Cameras. Both have the same primary 12.2MP rear lens, the same Pixel image processing pipeline, and the same 8MP front camera. The 4a 5G adds an ultrawide 16MP rear lens that the 4a doesn't have. For someone who takes a lot of landscape or group photos, the ultrawide is a useful upgrade.

Battery. The 4a has a 3140 mAh battery. The 4a 5G has a 3885 mAh. Combined with the more efficient 765G chip, the 4a 5G gets noticeably better battery life, even with the larger screen and 5G radio. Real-world usage: 4a is a one-day phone, 4a 5G can stretch to a day and a half on light usage.

5G itself. The 4a 5G supports sub-6 GHz 5G in the US (and in some markets, mmWave on Verizon). In 2020 the practical benefit of 5G is small for most users; coverage is patchy, the speed gains are modest in real-world conditions, and the battery cost of having the 5G radio active outweighs the throughput improvement most of the time. As 5G networks build out over the next two to three years, this calculus shifts.

The Real Decision

Three buyers, three answers.

If you want the best small phone in the Pixel lineup at a fair price, the 4a at $349 is the answer. The smaller form factor is increasingly rare in a 2020 flagship market that's converged on 6.5-inch devices, and the 4a hits the spec sheet that matters (great camera, clean software, 3-year update commitment) for less than half the cost of a Pixel 5.

If you want a more capable Pixel and you'll keep it for three years, the 4a 5G at $499 is worth the upgrade. The ultrawide camera, the bigger battery, the faster chip, and 5G readiness all extend the useful life of the phone. The bigger screen is a wash, depending on whether you prefer larger or smaller phones.

If you want the best Pixel period, the Pixel 5 at $699 is the answer. The 5 is a full magnesium body, has a 90Hz screen, includes wireless charging, and has the same camera as the 4a 5G plus better tuning. The 4a 5G is essentially a Pixel 5 Lite without those three features.

The Pricing Gap That Matters

$349 to $499 is a 43% premium for the 4a 5G over the 4a. That's a large gap for what's essentially the same phone with three improvements (bigger screen, faster chip, ultrawide camera) plus 5G. For comparison, the iPhone SE at $399 to the iPhone 11 at $599 is a similar 50% gap that's almost universally considered the SE buyer's right answer.

The 4a is the same call. Most buyers don't need the 5G, the ultrawide lens, or the bigger screen badly enough to justify the premium. The 4a is the Pixel that's punching above its weight and the 4a 5G is the one that's trying to be a Pixel 5 without being one. The $150 saved on the 4a buys a year of Google One storage, AppleCare's Android equivalent, and a decent pair of wireless earbuds, all of which deliver more daily value than the 4a 5G's incremental specs.
