It's used as a buffer and as a cache. If you are working with linux, and you do a "free -m" you will see the same. The other day I did this with my arch installation. Only thing open was Firefox, Openbox, and pidign. It was using 1GB of the 4GB. Only thing that means is that it's caching a lot of stuff.
